Driver’s ban for A19 crash

A DRINK driver smashed into a woman’s car on the A19.

Glen Campbell’s Fiat Diablo crashed into her car as she swerved to avoid ladders lying on the busy dual carriageway.

The police were called and Campbell was found to be more than twice the legal limit.

He pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol when he appeared at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court.

Campbell, 35, from Belmont, had a breath test reading of 87 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, more than twice the legal limit of 35.

He told police he had been drinking the night before the accident, which took place at about 11am on February 1.

Anna Haq, defending, said: “You have heard the circumstances of the offence and you have heard on the A19 on this particular day, there were ladders in the middle of the road.

“It does not excuse his behaviour and he is ashamed of his actions of that day.

“Unfortunately, on this occasion, he was not able to move out of the way of the vehicle in front and there was a collision.

“He is just grateful there were no injuries on that day.”

The court heard Campbell, of Ferndale, feared he would lose his job as a plumber.

He was banned from driving for 20 months and fined £340.
