A DRIVER has denied causing the death of a teenage girl who was hit by a car.

Sarah Jane Burke, 17, died in hospital days after she was struck by a vehicle in Ormonde Street, Sunderland, in September.

At Newcastle Crown Court yesterday David Baillie, 39, of Magdalene Place, Sunderland, pleaded not guilty to a charge of causing death by dangerous driving. He will be tried by a jury on June 9.

The case, which will be heard by Judge Paul Sloan QC, is expected to last up to five days and will involve a “large number” of witnesses.

Baillie was granted conditional bail until the next hearing, which will be a pre-trial review on May 19.
