Driver arrested after Sunderland New Year scrap

A MAN has been arrested after a New Year’s Day confrontation between two drivers in Sunderland city centre.

A 34-year-old man needed hospital treatment after the dispute, which took place at 2pm.

The victim was driving along New Durham Road, and had reached the roundabout at the junction with Tunstall Road, when the car in front of him stopped.

Police believe the driver then got out and approached the man’s car, before punching him in the face.

The victim was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital, where he was treated for a broken cheekbone.

A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm and released on police bail.

Anyone who witnessed the incident should contact Northumbria Police on 101, extension 69191, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
