A MAN was arrested by police who thought he had been trying to steal cars.
When officers stopped Richard Brown on a Sunderland street he smelled strongly of diesel.
The 40-year-old hadn’t been tampering with any cars, but did have a bag of white powder on him.
Brown, of Williams Terrace, Sunderland told officers it was cocaine, but they did not test the substance.
He was charged with attempting to possess a class A drug and pleaded guilty at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court.
Brown was fined £85 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
Gerry Armstrong, defending, said: “To his credit, he effectively gave the police the drugs.
“He has been working on his friend’s car and stunk of diesel.”
