A BRAVE dad confronted two masked men after they forced their way into his home.
The man came face-to-face with the intruders, one carrying a knife, as a child slept just metres away.
The would-be robbers broke into the family home in The Crescent, Newbottle, on Friday night, threatening and terrifying the man and his partner.
But when the homeowner stood up to them, the pair fled the scene empty-handed.
A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said the victims, a 47-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman, were shocked and shaken, but unhurt.
The young child was asleep upstairs at the time of the incident and was unaware of what had happened.
Poilce have been carrying out door-to-door inquiries over the weekend following the attempted break-in.
Detective Sergeant Barbara McGough, of Houghton CID, said: “Police are still carrying out an investigation into this matter. However, inquiries so far suggest that this is an isolated incident and we want to reassure local people that this is an unusual occurrence in this area.
“Officers are making inquiries in the area and extra uniformed patrols have been carried out to reassure local people.”
Many neighbours in the area were unaware the incident had taken place. Police say the raiders forced their way into the property at about 10.40pm on Friday.
A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said: “We would appeal to any witnesses who were in the area at the time and may have seen something to come forward.”
Anyone with information is urged to call Houghton CID on 0345 6043043 ext 66545 or 66578, or call the Crimestoppers number on 0800 555111.
