A THIEF hid his identity by wearing a motorbike helmet as he smashed open a till during a shop raid.

The robber went into Singh’s Premier Stores in Ethel Terrace, Castletown, just before 6.15pm on Saturday.

The attacker, who was wearing a full-face helmet, cracked open the till with the weapon and took money and cigarettes, then left carrying one of the store’s yellow plastic shopping baskets.

He fled on the back of a motorcycle, which had been parked up waiting for him outside the shop and was ridden by a second man.

Police investigating the robbery believe the bike hit a parked car, which was a short distance away from the general dealer’s, as they drove off from the street. No-one in the shop at the time of the robbery was injured.

Investigators are continuing to make enquiries in the area and are appealing for anyone with any information or anyone in the vicinity at the time of the incident to come forward. Northumbria Police can be called on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
