OFFENDERS spent 144 hours sprucing up Sunderland during a week of action.

During the Love Where You Live week, a group of six offenders took part in work including a litter pick in Barnes, thinning trees and bushes in Houghton, and painting fences in Springwell.

The work carried out saved taxpayers £875.52.

Bill, one of the Community Payback offenders, said: “I know I did wrong and that’s why I’m doing this Community Payback.

“We painted a fence which had loads of graffiti on it.”

Northumbria Probation Trust worked with Sunderland City Council to identify suitable projects for offenders to work on.
