AN elderly man was attacked by a masked robber in Bishopwearmouth Cemetery earlier today.
The pensioner, in his 80s, was grabbed from behind as he was standing near the cemetery’s war graves, just after 11am.
His attacker, who was wearing a dark ski mask, then demanded the man hand over cash.
But his victim bravely fought back, pushing off the robber and pulling off his mask.
The man fled the cemetery in Chester Road empty-handed, leaving the pensioner shaken but unhurt.
He is now being hunted by police, who say the would-be robber is white, in his mid to late 20s, about 5ft 8ins tall, medium build, with a rosy complexion. He was clean shaven and had short dark brown hair.
Detective Constable Anthony Woods, from Sunderland CID, said: “This was a cowardly assault on an elderly man in the cemetery and we’re doing everything possible to trace the man responsible.
“I’d urge anyone who knows who the offender is, who saw the incident or saw the offender in the area around the cemetery to get in touch with us as soon as possible.”
