A PENSIONER has become the latest victim of doorstep crime after a rogue builder conned him out of cash.

The conman knocked at the door of an 84-year-old man, who lives in the Sevenoaks Drive area of Hastings Hill, and offered to repair his driveway.

The man charged the resident what police have called an “extortionate” amount of money for the job.

He then spent less than a minute working on the drive before leaving, with the cash.

The victim contacted police who are now investigating the incident, which happened on Tuesday at about 11am.

Sunderland West Acting Inspector Kevin Jones said: “Officers from the neighbourhood policing team are out and about in the Sevenoaks Drive area speaking to residents, to see if they saw anything suspicious and also offering local people reassurance and advice.

“I’d ask that if anyone comes to the door offering any kind of service, repair work or trying to sell something, that people exercise caution.”

Anyone with information about the incident can phone police on 03456 043 043, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
