A SEX offender downloaded hundreds of indecent photographs of children partly because he was thrilled by the prospect of being caught.

Michael Jones was found to have 557 illegal images on his computer, Durham Crown Court heard.

“Police acting on information received raided his then home in Oakley Terrace, Chester-le-Street,” said Shaun Dryden, prosecuting.

“The computer was examined and found to contain the images, including 57 at level four on the scale of seriousness, and three at the most serious level five.”

Jones, 54, now of Canonbie, Dumfries, Scotland, admitted making indecent images of children and possession of an extreme pornographic image on July 5 last year.

The court heard he has previous convictions for downloading pornography, and a conviction for the sexual assault of a five-year old girl in Carlisle for which he was jailed for 18 months.

Tony Davis, defending, said: “Mr Jones has to accept his record, if nothing else, puts him at serious risk of prison today.

“But the probation report says the service is willing to work with him.

“If he is sent to immediate custody, he is unlikely to receive the treatment he needs.”

The court heard Jones admitted to probation officers that one of the reasons he downloaded the images was that the prospect of being caught thrilled him.

Judge Christopher Prince jailed Jones for 16 months.

The judge told him: “The report speaks of your interest in deviant sexual matters.

“Well, deviant is one thing, unlawful is another.

“You have shown no appreciation of the impact on the children of being photographed in this way, and there is an actual sexual assault in your record.”

Jones must sign on the Sex Offenders’ Register for 10 years.
