THIEVES stole a van belonging to the organisers of the Marathon of the North.

The Volkswagen Crafter was taken after keys were stolen from inside a marquee in the garden of Sunderland Museum on Saturday, as junior mile events took place nearby.

The van was then driven away from Laura Street, near Mowbray Park.

Sports clothing, iPods, equipment and bottles of water were inside when it was taken.

Officers are reviewing CCTV to try to catch those responsible.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “At 2.50pm on Saturday, a VW Crafter plain white panel van was stolen and inquiries are ongoing to trace the vehicle.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101.
