A DRIVER who caused the death of a pensioner in a road accident has been spared jail.
Stephen Wills hit 79-year-old Norman Hodgson as he crossed Waldridge Road, near his home in Chester-le-Street on January 3 last year.
The 44-year-old pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving.
At Newcastle Crown Court yesterday Wills was sentenced to nine months jail, suspended for 12 months, with a two year driving ban.
The court heard Wills has significant health problems.
Prosecutor Shaun Dodds told an earlier hearing the crown’s case was Wills was driving his Toyota Aygo above 50mph when it struck Mr Hodgson on the 30mph limit road.
Jane Waugh, defending, said Wills, of Glen Path, Chester-le-Street, pleaded guilty on the basis he was travelling at no more than 34mph.
