VANDALS have caused thousands of pounds of damage to more than 10 cars as they rampaged through a Wearside community.
Vehicles in Courtney Drive, Silksworth, and surrounding streets had their windscreens smashed in the attack.
Newsagent Ted Peary, who owns Courtney Drive Convenience Store, was one of those affected. His work van had its windscreen smashed by the yobs.
Mr Peary said: “They are mindless idiots. It’s just wanton vandalism.
“It’s got to be thousands of pounds of damage.
“It’s cost me over £100 in excess and that’s not including what we are going to lose in insurance.
“They must have caused more than £10,000-worth of damage in this street alone.”
He said customers had been coming into the shop to share stories of how their property had been damaged.
Mr Peary, though, rejected claims that the attack was influenced by the riots seen throughout England.
“I think it’s just mindless idiots,” he added.
“Fortunately, we have quite a lot of CCTV footage which the police have now taken away to look at.”
The incident happened in the early hours of Tuesday.
Mr Peary added that from looking at the footage one of the vandals was 6ft tall, with the other about 5ft 6in.
Northumbria Police say that so far 10 vehicles have been reported as being damaged and officers are investigating.
Neighbourhood Acting Inspector Ken Robinson said: “These incidents are acts of mindless damage which causes upset to residents and unnecessary expense.
“I would appeal for anyone in the community who may know the person or persons responsible to contact the police straightaway.”
“If anyone in the areas where the damage took place has any CCTV footage or any further information that could help us then please get in touch.”
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Northumbria Police on 03456 043 043 ext 69191 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
