FURIOUS car owners hit out after arsonists destroyed their cars.
Residents of Chester Crescent, Millfield, were woken by the smell of smoke and flames about 1am yesterday morning.
Three cars – a Ford Fiesta, Nissan Micra and Renault Clio – were set on fire by the reckless yobs who fled the scene.
Two crews from Railway Row station were called out and spent just under four hours tackling the blaze.
One of the car owners, who did not want to be named, said the “vindictive” attack was “disgraceful”.
“We have never had anything like this in the area before,” she said. “It’s a quiet street.
“It’s really shaken up one of the other ladies whose car was damaged. She lives by herself and she never slept last night.
“It’s disgusting, and it could have been a lot worse if the fire engines hadn’t come when they did because my tyres were nearly completely melted, and I’ve got oil in the boot.”
Neighbourhood Inspector Mick Hall said: “At this stage it doesn’t appear the cars have been specifically targeted, and we believe this has been mindless damage, which has obviously caused anger and frustration for the owners.
“Everything is being done to find the person responsible.
“I’d urge any witnesses or anyone with information about the fires to get in touch as soon as possible.”
Anyone with information is asked to call the non emergency number 101, ext 69191.
