A BOY who suffered head injuries after being hit by a van while riding his bicycle is still in a serious but stable condition.
The 11-year-old was hurt on Monday morning while playing in Elemore Lane, Easington Lane.
He was airlifted to the RVI in Newcastle by the Great North Air Ambulance about half-an-hour after the collision.
Paramedics and a doctor were seen checking the schoolboy over before putting him in the air ambulance for the seven-minute journey.
The incident has shocked the community in Easington Lane.
A number of residents rushed to the scene just after the incident took place.
Elemore Lane was closed for four hours after the smash.
A 49-year-old man arrested on suspicion of careless driving has been bailed pending further inquiries.
