POLICE evacuated a shopping centre after a bomb scare.

Shoppers were asked to leave Castle Dene Shopping Centre, in Peterlee, after a concerning call was made to the Phones 4U shop in the centre.

The call was made to the store at around 12.20pm on Tuesday and staff in turn rang police.

Sergeant Jim Peel, of Peterlee Police, said: “We are dealing with an incident in the shopping centre, at Phones 4U.

“Police are evacuating the centre and the incident is still ongoing.

“We are treating it as genuine.

“The call was made to us via the store, after staff received a call which gave them concern.

As a result of that, they have called us and we are dealing with it.”
