Body found after police called to River Wear in Sunderland

Police have launched an investigation after a body was recovered near the River Wear in Sunderland.

Officers were called to Lion Place, near to the former Golden Lion pub in South Hylton, at 11.18am on Saturday, January 9.

Northumbria Police have confirmed that a body has been found and the identity of the person is still being established.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Police are dealing with an incident down at the River Wear, at Lion Place, where a body has been recovered.

"Police received the call at 11.18am today and the incident is still under investigation.

"Police are still establishing the identity of the person.”
