THERE is a new beat on the blog as bobbies take to the web to give an insight into their job.

The Durham Beat Cop site has been launched by officers in the city to keep readers up to date with incidents and important crime prevention messages, with a good dose of humour also thrown in.

It is penned by Acting Sergeant Kay Howarth and Police Community Support Officer Paul Coburn, with tales of cake baking for colleagues and tribulations of random drug testing running alongside details of efforts to deal with thefts, seizing alcohol from teenagers and what happens to illegal substances once recovered.

Act Sgt Howarth said: “The idea came about because we started using Twitter and Facebook, but we wanted something more which would get through to people.

“We’ll be updating it as much as we can about things that are going on and also make it a bit comic and light-hearted.”
