THIEVES helped themselves to biscuits after trying to break into a church safe.
The yobs failed to steal anything when they got into Holy Trinity Church in Front Street, South Hetton.
They caused damage to the heavy-duty safe, which they unsuccessfully tried to open to take items of silverware.
Police say the invaders ate biscuits from the kitchen before leaving.
A mothers’ and toddlers’ group due to be held the next day had to be cancelled, while officers carried out inquiries at the building.
The break in happened during the night of Tuesday, November 13, but police have only just released details.
