A THIEF stole a customised BMX bike – so he could ride to his nan’s house.

Kyle Russell sped off on the £900 cycle which had been parked outside a newsagent’s at The Galleries shopping centre in Washington.

Newcastle Crown Court heard that the 19-year-old, who was on three suspended sentences at the time, had been caught on CCTV and was quickly arrested.

Prosecutor Diane Spence told the court: “In interview he fully admitted taking the bike and said he used it to get to his nan’s house.

“He said he intended to probably keep hold of it and continue using it.”

The bike was recovered from Russell’s grandmother’s house and returned to the owner undamaged after the incident on June 11.

Mr Recorder Jeremy Freedman sentenced Russell, of no fixed abode, to one month behind bars, which he has already served on remand.

The judge said: “I am satisfied it was an opportunistic offence. You saw it outside the newsagent’s and took it.”
