POLICE in Sunderland are working with garages to drive down fuel theft and slam the brakes on thieves.
Seven garages in the west of the city have signed up to the scheme, which will see them get alerts to any nearby crimes where drivers make off without paying – known as bilking.
Petrol station staff will be given a description of the car or registration, and are asked to call police immediately if the vehicle does arrive on their forecourt. Sunderland West Neighbourhood Inspector, Dave Pickett, said: “As the price of fuel continues to go up, stealing it becomes increasingly attractive.
“However, this isn’t a victimless crime, and fuel theft does have an impact on consumers as well as retailers.”
