An obsessive man attacked his former girlfriend – punching and kicking her as she lay helpless on the floor – after laying in wait for her to return home in the early hours.

Edward Simpson, 41, managed to gain entry to a communal area of Astral House in the city centre between 1am and 2am on June 10, Sunderland magistrates heard.

There, he waited until his former girlfriend returned home from a night out and subjected her to a vicious assault.

Prosecutor Janice Bellamy said the pair had been in a “short-lived” relationship, which ended 18 months ago, but Simpson had refused to accept that.

He had repeatedly followed her. On the night of the attack she used her fob to enter the building, but soon heard footsteps behind her.

“He punched and kicked her as she lay on the ground,” Mrs Bellamy said. “She was kicked in the stomach and punched in the head.”

Simpson, of Victoria Place, Hendon, admitted assault after being shown CCTV footage of the attack.

Chris Wilson, defending, said Simpson now accepts the relationship is over. He will be sentenced on July 27.
