A WOMAN was attacked as she went to help a pal who was being abused by another man.
The two women were walking through Sunderland city centre, when a man started being abusive towards one of them.
As her friend tried to defuse the situation, she was hit on the back of the head.
She was taken to hospital for treatment to her injuries, which are not described as life-threatening.
Acting Neighbourhood Inspector Mick Hall said: “As the women have been walking along Holmeside, a man has started shouting abuse, and as the 33-year-old has tried to calm the situation she’s been hit on the back of the head.
“We understand there were a number of people who were in the area at the time and witnessed the incident, and would like these people to contact police as they may be able to help with our enquiries.”
The attack took place on Sunday, May 29, at about 3am when the women were walking near The Borough pub.
