AN apprentice electrician was caught with more than nine grammes of cannabis.
Police discovered 9.36g of the Class B drug when they raided Karlos Keyarash Mokhtare’s home in Washington.
The 22-year-old, from Oxclose, pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis when he appeared before Sunderland magistrates.
Paul Anderson, prosecuting, said: “The total weight was 9.6g, which is a reasonable amount. Some scales were also recovered.
“The defendant was arrested and was extremely candid in interview.
“He told police where the drugs originated and admitted having possession of the bush, which he would have used himself for smoking.
“He is a man who sadly comes before the courts for the first time and with no previous convictions or cautions, but because of the amount of drugs recovered, the police have decided it is not appropriate to deal with this in any way other than a charge.”
Mokhtare, now of Bamburgh Close, was fined £165 and ordered to pay £85 towards court costs. He hopes to have a full-time job with Newcastle City Council when his course finishes next month.
