Appeal after attempted robbery in Sunderland

A MAN smashed the window of a car and demanded money from the terrified driver.

The female driver screamed and the man ran off empty handed, at about 10.40pm on Wednesday in Carley Road.

The victim was left shaken but uninjured by the incident.

The would-be robber is described as 5ft and of medium build. He was wearing grey bottoms, a short black jacket and a cream woolly hat .

Neighbourhood Inspector Tony Carty said: “We’re carrying out enquiries to trace the man responsible for this attempted robbery and would ask anyone who was in Carley Road last night to contact us.

“Sunderland played at home to Stoke on Wednesday night and people who attended the match may still have been in the area at the time of the incident.

“If they saw a man similar to the man described or witnessed the incident we would want to hear from them.

“Extra officers will be in the area both to reassure residents who may be concerned and to carry out enquiries.”
