Crash course will be hitting Sunderland
A brand new club night is being launched in the city this month. MARISSA CARRUTHERS finds out more.
A Sunderland nightclub has pulled off a major coup as a new night gears up to land in the city.
Manchester promoters Late'n'Live have teamed up with Independent to launch a new clubbing concept for the city.
Combining live music with clubbing, The Crash Club will bring the best new and breaking bands from the national and international circuit to Sunderland every Friday night from May 29.
Helping to get the party started is Razmataz Lorry Excitement, who have been booked for the opeing night.
The night will fuse a clubbing environment with the atmosphere of a live gig. The Crash Club is already attracting attention from across the country, with London club promoters keen to get a piece of the action.
Keith Parrish, of Independent, said: "The club night is not an uncommon event in a number of the UK's major cities like Manchester, London and Glasgow.
"Bands will play short sets in the early hours of the morning, supported by DJ sets before and after.
"We're proud to be the first to introduce this system to Sunderland, and working with Late'n'Live will enable us to confirm some of the best bands around."
Late'n'Live owner Scott Power, who regularly hosts acts in the North West, including shows with Glasvegas, Pete Docherty and The Fratellis, said: "Sunderland's recent history is awash with great young bands.
"As well as the obvious names like The Futureheads, there are bands like This Ain't Vegas, Field Music, The Small Screen Lightshow and B>E>A>K who are well known in the industry and very well respected.
"I'm excited to be working with Independent and I'm excited about the bands we're bringing there."
The Crash Club aims to fill the gap in the city's live music scene, with bands including Exit Calm and Dinosaur Pile-Up gearing up to play in the coming months.
Razmataz Lorry Excitement, aka Kevin Dosdale, is one of the most exciting artists in the region, producing stomping electro in the vein of Daft Punk, Simian Mobile Disco and LCD Soundsystem via a mixture of his own vocals, groove boxes and analogue modelling synthersisers.
Recently performing at Leeds/Reading festivals, Razmataz was regarded as the highlight alongside Glasvegas and is widely held to be the young apprentice of Britain's great dance music producers, including Orbital, Underworld and Leftfield.
The Crash Club starts on Friday, May 29. Doors open at 10.30pm and tickets are 4.
