IT was love at first sight for a Wearside couple who are celebrating 50 years of married bliss.
When Malcolm Barker first met Mary he knew she was the one for him.
The couple, who live in Easington Lane, are planning a celebration meal with their family to mark their Golden Wedding.
Retired miner Malcolm, 70, said: “We used to go to a lot of dances and I met Mary at a dance in Moorsley, near Hetton.
“I walked her to the bus stop and asked if I could see her again and it went from there really.
“That was about three years before we got married.
“We have had 50 fantastic years, we have had good health and the kids have all had their health, we have been very lucky.
“I wouldn’t swap her for anything.
“Fifty years is a long time, but it has been good years.” Former machinist Mary, 71, and Malcolm tied the knot at Easington Lane’s St Michael And All Angels’ Church surrounded by family and friends.
The pair have three children, Malcolm, 49, Gary, 45 and 41-year-old Dianne, as well as six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and another on the way.
Since they retired the pair spend a lot of time going out and about together and also regularly visit their daughter who lives near Cambridge.
Malcolm said: “We do everything together and always go places together. I love to do my gardening and I think we are professional babysitters.”
