A MAJOR shake-up to council tax benefit in Sunderland will take place next year.
Sunderland City Council has started eight weeks of consultation on changes that are part of the Government’s Welfare Reform programme.
The changes are set to create a new council tax support scheme as government grants to support welfare payments are reduced.
Council bosses have estimated that £3.4million of current Council Tax benefit grant is likely to be lost from a total grant of £27million.
Under the Government’s directions, pensioners will receive full protection in a new local scheme and it will see all working age benefit claimants contributing to Council Tax bills.
Residents can have their say on the plans by visiting www.sunderland.gov.uk/counciltaxsupport, calling into any customer service centres or in November’s edition of Community News.
The consultation period closes on November 30.
