A coroner is to write to police requesting an explanation if further details of the investigation into the crash which killed a teenager are not provided.

Karl Bennett, 17, was a passenger in a green Ford Mondeo when it left the A182 South Hetton Road, crashed and overturned in a field in May last year.

Karl was an apprentice design technician with Northern Gas Network and was a member of the former Hetton Boxing Club.

The alleged driver of the car has been interviewed by police.

At a review into Karl’s inquest, held at the Coroner’s Court in Crook, coroner Andrew Tweddle said there was still no word from police on whether anyone would be charged over the crash.

He adjourned the case to March 21 and said: “If we don’t have any answer by then, I will require written representation from the senior officer involved, explaining in detail the reasons for what would by then be a considerable delay.”

Anyone with information should call 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
