A POLICE officer and a van driver have been taken to hospital after a rush-hour crash.
Investigations are continuing into how the crash – which led to the drivers being cut free from the wreckage – happened.
The B1285 between Seaham and Murton, near to the A19 flyover, was closed after the collision which happened at about 4.30pm yesterday.
The police officer, 50, was driving a BMW traffic car, damaged on its front, and the other driver was in a Renault Kangoo van, which was damaged on its side.
When firefighters from Seaham and Peterlee arrived, paramedics were already on the scene.
Both men were put on spinal boards and taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital suffering back pain. The police officer has a suspected broken hand.
The incident happened on the stretch of road between the junction with the B1432 to Cold Hesledon and the roundabout which leads to Dalton Park, Murton, the sliproad to the A19 southbound and A182 interchange.
The road was closed as investigations were carried out into the crash.
