A SINGING starlet from Wearside is treading the boards in a top musical.

Abby Dolan, nine, from East Herrington, is one of the children’s ensemble in Oliver!, which is running in the North East.

It opened at the Theatre Royal, Newcastle, after a sell-out run in London’s West End.

Proud mum Lesley Dolan explained how her daughter got the part.

“Abby really got into the singing about two years ago,” she said. “So I decided to give her some lessons and found a teacher in Chester-le-Street.

“She’s been going fortnightly ever since and doing well at it, so when the audition came up we decided it was worth giving it a try.

“Abby had to sing Consider Yourself from the show, and also dance and act a bit which she can do.

“I don’t think they expect them to sing in a particular key, just to sing well.”

Abby will combine more than 30 appearances in Newcastle in the next eight weeks with her schooling at East Herrington Primary.

“That’s been fitting in quite nicely,” said Lesley. “Abby has been down to Plymouth to meet the cast, but that was during the school holidays.

“She will need some time off to do the occasional matinée, but the school have been very good about it.

“Abby is delighted to be doing the musical and I think it’s a wonderful achievement for her.”

l Oliver! starring Brian Conley as Fagin, is at the Theatre Royal until November 3.
