Dick Advocaat is staying at Sunderland next season after experiencing a sensational change of heart.

Advocaat rejected Sunderland’s overtures to extend his stay at the Stadium of Light last week and vowed that he would go ahead with his plans to retire from football after fulfilling his remit to keep the Black Cats in the Premier League.

Speaking about his decision to return, Advocaat said: “After a lot of discussions with Ellis and Lee, they convinced me that I am the right man for the club.

“It was a great feeling to be part of Sunderland in the last few months, the experience was something very special and after talking with Lee, Ellis and of course my family, we all agree it is the right decision.”

Since then, Sunderland have been struggling to find a suitable successor for the ex-Holland manager.

But Advocaat has since performed a U-turn and talks opened over the ex-Holland manager remaining as Sunderland’s head coach on a one-year contract.

Negotiations have now been finalised, providing a huge boost for Sunderland ahead of next season.
