A DIAMOND couple celebrated 60 years of wedded bliss by raising hundreds of pounds for charity.
Pensioners Rob and Margaret Jonas, who live in Washington, met at a dance in the town.
They married, aged 19 and 21, on May 22, 1954, at St Mary’s Church in Heworth, and Margaret moved from Bill Quay to Washington to live with her new husband.
The couple went on to have four children – Rob, Phil, Susan and Margaret – seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Six decades later, they celebrated their anniversary with a party for family and friends at the Stella Maris Club in Albany, Washington.
The kind-hearted pair asked guests to make a donation to charity in lieu of gifts and raised £610 for the British Heart Foundation and the Diabetes Foundation.
Son-in-law Ken said: “Margaret and Rob would just like to say a big thank-you to everyone for their kind generosity.”
As well as being a mum-of-four, Margaret, 79, worked at the CWS shirt factory at Pelaw, then Philips Components in Washington.
Rob, 81, was a plater at Cooks, Hobson’s Engineering and Westline Engineering, until they both retired, aged 64.
