VOLUNTEERS got their hands dirty to clean up a beach.
Hendon Beach is looking brighter and cleaner thanks to the efforts of International Community Organisation of Sunderland (ICOS), which supports ethnic minorities living on Wearside.
ICOS is working with other minority ethnic groups across the city for the Sustainable Sunderland Programme.
Spokesman Daniel Krzyszczak said: “Doing this job made it easy for people to see the detrimental effects of fly–tipping, and they learned more about sustainability in general too with a fun ecology quiz.
“All of this was made possible by the Big Lottery Fund, who are sponsoring the whole project, as well as the city council, who kindly provided our members with picking sticks, vests and rubbish bags.”
The day-long beach clean also included a barbecue, games and live music.
