POLICE have named the pensioner who died when he was hit by a car on Christmas Eve.
Alan Dunn, 67, of Cotsford Crescent, Horden, was hit by a grey Nissan Micra on the A1086 Sunderland Road, around 300m south of its junction with Thorpe Road.
A police spokeswoman said Mr Dunn had been walking south along the footpath to the west side of Sunderland Road shortly after 8am on Monday, when he entered the carriageway and was hit by the car, which was travelling north.
The North East Air Ambulance attended but Mr Dunn was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the car, a 19-year-old woman from Peterlee, was shocked but unhurt.
Accident investigators have appealed for anyone who witnessed the collision, or Mr Dunn’s actions immediately beforehand, to contact them direct on 375 2159 or through the non-emergency number 101.
