CHILDREN were on song last night to kick off Christmas celebrations.

Children from George Washington Primary School, Albany Village Primary School and St Bede’s Primary School, in Washington, joined panto stalwart Steve Walls on stage to bring festive cheer to the crowds. The Mayor of Sunderland, Councillor Bob Heron, turned on the Christmas lights, symbolising the start of Christmas in Washington.

He said: “As Mayor of Sunderland I am delighted to attend such a fantastic community event, and have this chance to wish everyone here in Washington and across the rest of our city a very Merry Christmas.”

Sunderland’s Christmas Programme of activity began last Thursday, including late night shopping and the “free after three” parking initiative. For more information, visit www.sunderlandlive.co.uk
