A GROUP of campaigners will be out in force as they look to theatre-goers to boost an animal charity’s funds.
Supporters of the London-based Brooke horse charity will collect cash at performances of War Horse at the Sunderland Empire Theatre on Thursday, Friday and at both matinee and evening shows on Saturday to gather donations.
The Brooke is an international animal welfare organisation dedicated to improving the lives of working horses, donkeys and mules, providing treatment, training and programmes around animal health and wellbeing across Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Carole Kirk is among those in the region to help the Brooke. She said: “The Empire has been absolutely brilliant, and we appreciate its help so much.”
War Horse, based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo, follows the story of a horse called Joey after it is sold to the cavalry and shipped to France as the First World War begins.
Caught up in enemy fire, fate sees the animal serve on both sides before finding itself alone in no man’s land.
The High Street West venue will hold performances of the show until Saturday, May 17.
