FRIENDS and family will tee off at a charity golf day in memory of a firefighter who lost his battle with cancer.

Peter Metcalfe died aged just 35 last June of stomach cancer – just days after being diagnosed.

Now the keen golfer will be remembered with a fund-raising event at Boldon Golf Club next Friday.

Dad Walter and brothers Warren and Ian will be among the 88 taking part in a Texas Team Scramble event which will bolster the coffers of the Fire Fighters Charity and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Peter’s widow Angela, whom he married just two days before his death, and mother Kathleen will also plant an oak tree in his honour.

Peter, from West Boldon, only became aware of his illness when he returned from white water rafting during a stag weekend and found bruises on his legs.

He went to the doctor and was admitted to hospital for tests before being diagnosed with stomach cancer, but died just 16 days after first seeking medical attention.

Brother Warren said: “Peter was not only my brother but my best friend, and he is such a big loss to both myself and all the family.

“It is still hard to believe that two weeks before his death we were white water rafting together in Scotland and jumping off cliffs into pools of water.”

Peter was a firefighter for five years and was stationed at Hebburn. His family said it was a job he loved.

Warren, 40, who is also a firefighter based in Durham, and Ian will also be taking part in the Strongarm Challenge 2013, organised by firefighters across the North East.

The gruelling four-day event, which starts on September 30, includes a 23-mile kayak of Loch Ness in Scotland, a marathon taking in the ascent and descent of Ben Nevis and a 240-mile cycle race from the base of the mountain to Tyne and Wear Fire Brigade Headquarters in Washington.

The Fire Fighters Charity and the Make-A-Wish Foundation will again benefit from the challenge.
