ECHO-READING runners in Sunderland can get their hands on a place for this year’s Bupa Great North Run, we can reveal today.

There are just three-and-a-half months to go to the world’s biggest half marathon, which will be staged for the 32nd time on Sunday, September 16, with 54,000 runners from across the UK descending on the NorthEast .

In association with the race organisers Nova, we have created a ‘Race within a Race’ for Wearsiders who are hoping to take part in the iconic event.

Although entries for the race closed earlier this year, we have 25 places for runners within our catchment area.

There are also two free places up for grabs for those with the most interesting story.

Maybe you want to take on the course in memory of a loved one, or are hoping to raise thousands of pounds for a charity close to your heart.

If you live within the postcode catchment area of the Sunderland Echo you’ll be automatically entered into our Bupa Great North Run ‘Race within a Race’.

The winners will then receive online tokens to register for this year’s event.

And the first man and woman to finish from our area will receive a plaque to acknowledge their triumph, together with an Asics backpack and a complementary race entry to the 2013 Bupa Great North Run.

We’ll publish the results of all finishers in our area in a special supplement the week following the event.

Echo editor Rob Lawson said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for our readers to take part in one of the great North East sporting events.

“I look forward to hearing why those who want a place feel they deserve it.

“Good luck to anybody who is entering and I’m sure those who represent Sunderland in this September’s run will do the city proud.”

To enter, send in 200 words on why you feel you deserve a place to Sunderland Echo Great North Run 2012 competition, C/o David Allison, Echo House, Pennywell Industrial Estate, Sunderland, SR4 9ER.

Include full contact details as well as your age and address. You can also email david.allison@northeast-press.co.uk

The deadline for entries is Saturday, June 9. Full terms and conditions of run entry below.

THE first ever Great North Run was held on June 28, 1981, when 12,000 runners hit the pavements.

Over the past 31 years it has established itself as the world’s premier half-marathon,

In 2011, a course record for the run was set by Kenyan athlete, who Martin Mathathi stormed to victory in just 59 minutes and 27 seconds.
