In the 30 years since it started, Neighbours has offered a slice of sunny Australia to its legions of British fans.

It’s also proved a fertile ground for talent scouts and Hollywood casting agents, with many of the biggest stars of today starting their careers in Ramsay Street. Don’t believe us? Here are 13 celebs who started out as Erinsborough residents...

KYLIE MINOGUE

Way before the gold hot pants and global fame, Kylie was best known for playing dungaree-loving mechanic Charlene in Neighbours, a role she played for two years. And who over the age of 30 can forget the moment Charlene, complete with Eighties perm, married Mr Mullet himself Scott Robinson? Which promptly leads us on to...

JASON DONOVAN

Back in the Eighties, Donovan was THE pin-up, during his stint playing one half of Australia’s biggest and best soap super couple; Scott and Charlene. His success on the show paved the way for pop stardom, musicals and, erm, Iceland adverts.

CRAIG MCLACHLAN

In the late Eighties, McLachlan played Charlene’s curly-mopped joker brother Henry. Since then, he’s forged a singing career, topped off by 1990 hit Mona, and played Danny Zuko in the West End production of Grease.

DELTA GOODREM

Goodrem played girl-next-door Nina on and off for three years from 2002-2005, temporarily leaving the soap when she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. She has since made a full recovery and has continued to release music after bidding farewell to Ramsay Street.

GUY PEARCE

He’s recently starred in crime drama The Rover, Ridley Scott sci-fi flick Prometheus and Oscar-winning movie The King’s Speech, but Pearce started his career in humble old Ramsay Street as troubled Mike Young back in 1986.

MARGOT ROBBIE

The Wolf Of Wall Street might have brought Margot Robbie global acclaim, but it was as groupie Donna in Neighbours, from 2008-2011, where the rising Hollywood star cut her teeth.

NATALIE IMBRUGLIA

Before releasing seminal Nineties hit Torn, in the early Nineties, Imbruglia made waves in the Aussie soap by playing construction worker Beth, whose romantic trysts with surfer Brad Willis kept us all glued to our screens.

LIAM HEMSWORTH

Miley Cyrus’ ex started his career in Erinsborough playing charmer Josh Taylor for a year in 2007, and can now be seen in The Hunger Games franchise.

CHRIS HEMSWORTH

Liam’s older brother Chris also did his - albeit very brief - time in Neighbours, playing Jamie Kane for one episode in 2002. Since then, the actor has made a string of blockbusters, including Rush, Thor and Snow White And The Huntsman.

RUSSELL CROWE

The Gladiator himself appeared in Neighbours for four episodes in 1987, as bruiser Kenny Larkin, who had a criminal past. Cue oversized leather jacket and mullet. Of course.

HOLLY VALANCE

Valance followed the well-trodden path of landing a role in the soap (in this case as Felicity ‘Flick’ Scully), staying for a few years, then launching a pop career. But Valance needn’t worry too much about living off her royalties, having recently wed a British property tycoon.

JESSE SPENCER

Billy, the youngest child of Ramsay Street stalwarts Karl and Susan Kennedy, was played by Spencer for over a decade. Then LA came a-knocking and he hotfooted it to the States to star alongside Hugh Laurie in TV favourite House.

ALAN DALE

To many, he’ll always be Jim Robinson, but since leaving Neighbours in 1993, Dale has had starring roles in Ugly Betty and The O.C., as well as smaller parts in Lost and 24.
