SUNDERLAND football club’s community wing is thousands of pounds better off after a special event.
Business networking organisation The Mussel Club held its monthly meeting at the Stadium of Light last night, featuring a talk-in with Black Cats’ chairman Niall Quinn, chief executive Steve Walton and Lesley Spuhler, chief executive of the SAFC Foundation, who explained the foundation’s work with thousands of families across Wearside.
All proceeds from the evening’s £25 admission went to the foundation and more than 20 city businesses signed up on the night to become corporate partners.
Steve Walton said seeing the foundation’s work put things such as Sunday’s drubbing at Manchester City in perspective.
“The pain of a 5-0 defeat is lost in a few weeks, but the work the foundation does can last for ever,” he said.
Niall Quinn added: “This football club must never ever lose its common touch and its roots with the people who built it, who support it and make it what it is.”
