A CAR flipped onto its roof and became embedded in a metal fence in a serious smash in Sunderland.

Emergency crews were scrambled to Chester Road this afternoon after the car ended up on the fencing separating the east and westbound carriageways.

A white Ford Mondeo taxi had damage to its windscreen on the eastbound carriage way, while a black Nissan Qashqai had crashed through the fence separating the road’s westbound carriageway from a grass verge.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “At 2.05pm police were informed of a collision on the A193 involving three vehicles.

“The road was closed for a short time however traffic is now flowing in both directions.

“There are no details of any injuries and none are believed to be life threatening.”

Sandra Stephenson, 48, witnessed some of the incident from her home directly adjacent to where the Nissan hit the fence.

“I looked outside and I just saw a car overturn, that was it,” she told the Echo.

“I rang 999 and they were here within five minutes.

“It was quite a shock.”
