FIREFIGHTERS were called to a supermarket car park after a car burst into flames this morning.

A crew from Peterlee fire station were called to the town’s Asda at 7.30am.

A firefighter wearing breathing apparatus used one hose reel to put out the fire, which started in the engine of a grey hatchback.

An electrical fault is believed to have sparked the fire, which destroyed the car’s engine.

The driver was in Asda at the time and no-one was hurt in the blaze.

The car was later towed away.
