SUNDERLAND’S top clergyman Canon Stephen Taylor is to leave his post after more than a decade on Wearside.
He will leave the city in September to become Archdeacon of Maidstone with responsibilities for communities and partnerships in the diocese of Canterbury.
Canon Taylor, 55, of Sunderland Minster, is a prominent figure in the area and has been involved with various charities over the past few years, including climbing Mount Kilimanjaro last year in a Sunderland Partnership challenge.
Canon Taylor, who has been at the Minster for 11 years, said he was excited about the challenge of the new role, but was also mindful that he will be leaving the many friends he has made during his time in Sunderland.
He said: “I’m going to be away in the South East but Sunderland will still be very much a part of me.”
Rev Stephen Hazlett, industrial chaplain at Sunderland Minster, said Canon Taylor had been a great asset to the city.
