CANDIDATES have thrown their hats into the ring to become councillor for Houghton.
Sunderland City Council announced a by-election would be held on Thursday May 2 this year to fill the seat left vacant after the death of Labour councillor Kath Rolph.
Labour, the Lib Dems, the Tories and Ukip will all field candidates in the ward. John Ellis, member of Residents Against Toxic Site and husband of independent councillor Sheila Ellis, is also standing for election as an independent.
In the past, council elections in Houghton have been hotly contested by Labour and the independents.
