A CANCER charity is calling on runners to help it raise thousands of pounds for lifesaving treatments.
Macmillan Cancer Support is urging those who’ve signed up to next month’s Sunderland City 10k, but haven’t picked a charity yet, to join Team Macmillan.
The charity is hoping to generate £10,000 from the redspottedhanky.com-sponsored event, which takes place on Sunday, June 26.
Sarah Goldie, fund-raising manager, said: “Macmillan relies almost entirely on donations to fund our vital cancer services so we are really hoping a lot of local people will take on this run for us.
“I am taking part. I hope other people will too.
“It is a great way to get your friends and family together and run, jog or walk and help to support people living with cancer in the UK.
“It’s a great way to celebrate the lives of loved ones who have been affected by cancer.
“So fasten your shoelaces and come along for the challenge in Sunderland.
“If you decide to do it for Macmillan then it will give you even more motivation because you’ll know that with every step you take, you are raising money for people affected by cancer.”
Macmillan says that the money raised from the run will be used to fund its vital cancer services, from specialist nurses and doctors, to help and advice for people who have financial problems as a result of battling the illness.
Sarah also revealed that this year represents a significant milestone for the charity.
“We are celebrating 100 years of providing cancer care in 2011 and this a great way to continue improving the lives of people affected by cancer,” she said.
“Signing up to take on a challenge like this is a fantastic way to motivate you to get fit or to stay fit”.
