Sunderland’s ex-service personnel are being invited to attend the War Memorial in Burdon Road tomorrow to commemorate the 70th anniversary of VJ Day.
Although the cessation of hostilities was agreed on August 15, 1945, the actual surrender by the Japanese at the end of the Second World War was not signed until the September 2.
Many from the Wearside area suffered at the hands of the Japanese when 125 Anti Tank Regiment were torpedoed and captured.
They were used as forced labour on the infamous Death Railways. The commemoration will take place at 11am and veterans and standards are invited to attend.
A wreath-laying service will take place with a bugler and deputy mayor Coun Alan Emmerson is set to attend.
