OLYMPIC torchbearers have been honoured in a grand ceremony of thanksgiving.

More than 50 torchbearers attended the one-of-a-kind event at Durham Cathedral on Saturday where they were given commemorative certificates to mark their efforts towards the London 2012 Olympics Torch Relay.

Durham County Council chairwoman Coun Linda Marshall, who organised the hour-long service, said: “I wanted to do something to say one last thank you to all those who were involved in the Olympic celebrations, because everything is over and done with now.”

Torchbearers from all over County Durham were involved in the service of thanksgiving, as well as athletes and officials who played their part in the landmark London 2012 games, including chief starter Alan Bell, who famously disqualified Usain Bolt from a World Championship race in Daegu,South Korea in 2011.

He received a chairman’s award from Durham County Council.
