TWO female plumbing students are on course for their careers at a new training centre.

Run by Sunderland College, the Blue Square Training facility in Boldon, which opened in September, offers students the chance to learn new vocational skills to help them get into work.

Along with about 50 other learners, Jaymi Worley, 32, from Washington, and Holly Ridley, 18, from Jarrow, have completed their level one plumbing training and are now looking forward to taking the certificate stage.

Jaymi said: “I have loved every minute of the course so far, and it has reaffirmed to me that plumbing is definitely the career I want to pursue.

“I’m chuffed to have completed the first stage, and I’m now looking forward to progressing on to stage two in September.

“The fact that it is typically such a male-orientated profession just makes me more determined to succeed and show that women can do it just as well.”

Sunderland College launched the new training centre with the aim of getting more young people and adults into employment through vocational courses.

As well as plumbing, the centre offers training in motor vehicle mechanics, bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, welding and engineering.

The courses are open to anyone and are free to those claiming job seeker’s allowance.

Cameron Ross, a vocational lecturer at the centre, said: “We are really pleased for Jaymi, Holly and all our learners. They’ve all shown enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.

“It is really rewarding to see them all enjoying the course and find so many of them are keen to progress.

“The courses are attracting all sorts of people from all over the region who want to learn a trade and secure a recognised qualification that can help them develop a new career.”

The next courses start this month and they are already proving popular.
