ANDREW James UK turned up the heat at the Sunderland Echo Portfolio Business Awards last night.
The Seaham kitchen supplies business, set up by cousins Andrew Tomlinson and James Buckle, scooped the Exporter of the Year award before being named overall Business of the Year in the ceremony at the Stadium of Light.
“From small beginnings and a simple idea, this company has powered its way to become a major player in its market,” said our judges.
“Through consummate customer care, a passion for quality and innovation in the products it sells, always expanding its range to meet demand - it is reaping the rewards as its sales and turnover are going through the roof.”
Sunderland Echo John Szymanski welcomed the audience to last night’s event: “The awards night has become an increasingly important event in the city’s business calendar, and we’re now celebrating our eleventh fantastic year,” he said.
“We feel the awards have an important part to play in recognising the excellent companies and workers we have on Wearside and instilling confidence within the whole business community.”
The climax of the evening was the presentation of the Lifetime Contribution award to John Hays, the man who started a business in the back of his mother’s childrenswear shop and is now on course to achieve a £1billion-a-year turn-over within the next five years.
“This award brings together and recognises two key priorities of John’s life – business success and Sunderland success,” read the commendation.
